Team Work and Communication

Today we worked as a team collecting data for research in the community.  There was a family of 4 so we all did a survey on a family member.  Unfortunately,  there wasn't a translator available when I was doing my survey.  When I tried reading the questions in Spanish it wasn't working.  In order to keep us moving because I knew numbers really count I just turned my phone towards the 22 year old woman so she could read the questions in Spanish.  I only had to interrupt the translator once to help me with an answer and the rest I used the translator on my phone. When I told the translator, that was in our group, that I was done she said that was really fast and I did good.  Unfortunately,  I didn't just accept the compliment because I didn't feel good about it since I didn't ask the questions my self by reading them out in Spanish. Therefore my reply was exactly that. Communication really mattered when it came to collecting data and the language barrier makes it difficult.  But overall I am grateful for meeting people in the community and learning what kind of barriers they have when it comes to women's health.

  1. Taking surveys is tough, you tried and then changed in a different direction. I am sure that they appreciated you trying.
